New North Church (first) is dedicated.

May 5, 1714

Originally called the Middle Street Meeting House, the church is located at the corner of Hanover and Clark Streets at today’s 401 Hanover Street. The congregation was established on April 10, 1712. John Webb is the first minister. A controversy over the appointment of a new minister occurs in 1720.* The wooden church is rebuilt in 1730 and replaced by a new building (second) in 1804.* The congregation becomes Unitarian in 1813. Francis Parkman, father of the historian, serves as minister from 1813 to 1849. The congregation subsequently merges with the Bulfinch Street Church.
